Rectory Farm Primary School believes that Physical Education (PE), experienced in a safe and supportive environment, is essential to ensure all pupils attain optimal physical and emotional development and good health. We aim to develop a love of sport and physical activity in all pupils and inspire them to become lifelong active people when they leave KS2. Rectory Farm want all pupils to develop and improve the fundamental movement skills needed to access all physical activity, including invasion games, dance, and gymnastics.

Intent

It is our intention to:

  • To engage all pupils in regular physical activity
  • To increase participation in competitive sport
  • To provide opportunities for pupils to participate in a broad range of physical activities, providing variety and an introduction to as many sports as possible.
  • To develop pupils’ fundamental movement skills, enabling lifelong participation in physical activity
  • To develop multi-ability skills through PE, enabling pupils to use and develop key movement, cognitive, effort and sporting behaviours through physical activity.
  • To encourage all pupils to achieve their personal best.

Implementation

Rectory Farm Primary School use REAL PE as part of our PE curriculum. REAL PE is a unique, child centred PE scheme which focuses on being inclusive, challenging and supportive of every child. It focuses on the importance of developing fundamental movement skills (such as agility, balance and coordination) and applying these skills to games or activities. This platform is used, and embedded, throughout the school from Year R to Year 6. In KS1 they use REAL PE to deliver all their two-hour PE allocation, whereas in KS2, pupils are introduced to team games and individual sports meaning REAL PE is used alongside this introduction of competitive sports.

In Year 5, all pupils will have the opportunity to participate in structured swimming lessons that are currently taking place at Moulton Leisure Centre. The expectation is that all pupils can confidently swim 20 meters. If this is not achieved in Year 5, top up lessons are offered in Year 6 to ensure that all pupils at Rectory Farm leave KS2 confident in the water.

Throughout the year, pupils are invited to attend competitive sporting events within the local area. This is an inclusive approach which endeavours to encourage not only physical development but also mental well-being. These events also develop teamwork and leadership skills and are very much enjoyed by the pupils. We also run inter house competitions during PE lessons along with a ‘personal best’ challenge. The language of ‘personal best’ is used so that all pupils can achieve in a lesson no matter what level of physical skills they have.

Rectory Farm has a curriculum overview which clearly sets out the units of physical activity covered across the school year, ensuring that the requirements of the National Curriculum are fully met. Sports tend to be taught during their season and have a direct link to competitive opportunities.

Intended Impact

  • Motivate pupils to participate in a variety of sports through quality teaching that is engaging and fun.
  • Pupils will enjoy being active and be eager to represent the school at events and competitions.
  • Pupils’ fundamental movement skills will continue to improve with more confident and physically skilled pupils overall.
  • The profile and expectations of PE and school sport will continue to be high.
  • Pupils at Rectory Farm will hopefully grow up to live happy and healthy lives utilising the skills and knowledge acquired through PE.
